Patella dislocations

This common injury where the kneecap is knocked out of joint requires appropriate assessment and treatment to prevent recurrence. Generally for first time traumatic dislocations we will attempt non-operative management after relocation with RICE followed by a muscle-strengthening programme. If persistent swelling and pain occurs then further imaging will be required to exclude underlying cartilage damage and the presence of loose bodies within the knee. This would require knee arthroscopy to remove the loose bodies.

For those patients with recurrent dislocations your surgeon is likely to discuss surgical options to stabilise your patella.
